Eye Drops FAQs

Eye drops are liquid medications designed to be applied directly to the eyes. They can help relieve various eye conditions, such as dryness, redness, or irritation. Depending on their formulation, eye drops can lubricate the eyes, reduce inflammation, or treat infections. When applied, the drops spread across the surface of the eye, providing relief and therapeutic effects.

To use eye drops correctly, follow these steps:
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid.
Hold the dropper above your eye, avoiding contact with your eye or eyelid.
Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the lower eyelid pocket.
Close your eye gently and press lightly on the corner of your eye near the nose for a few seconds to prevent the drops from draining away.
Repeat the process for the other eye if needed, and wash your hands again.

It depends on the type of eye drops. Some eye drops are specifically formulated to be safe for use with contact lenses, while others are not. Always check the label or consult with a healthcare professional before using eye drops with contact lenses. If you are unsure, it is generally recommended to remove your contact lenses before applying eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

While eye drops are generally safe, some people may experience side effects. Common side effects include temporary stinging, burning, or blurred vision. If you experience severe discomfort, redness, swelling, or an allergic reaction, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional immediately. Always follow the instructions provided with the eye drops to minimise the risk of side effects.

Eye drops should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Most eye drops should be kept at room temperature, but always check the packaging for specific storage instructions. Some eye drops may require refrigeration. Ensure that the dropper tip does not touch any surfaces to avoid contamination.
